SOE-SYA OBIZA

SOE-SYA OBIZA(疏影舍带座), which opened in 2022, is a guesthouse located near Daitokuji temple in the North District of Kyoto. The guesthouse offers matcha, Chinese tea, and Taiwanese tea to its guests.

The original owner of this house used to run a kimono shop in this location before immigrating to the United States over ten years ago. She was fond of this area of Kyoto where SOE-SYA OBIZA is now situated. After inheriting this traditional folk house from the original owner of the kimono shop, I began living in the house since the summer of 2021. Initially, I never thought about opening a guesthouse here.

However, after living for a while, not surprisingly, I felt that this house was too big… Many people had lived in this house after the kimono shop owner moved to the United States. A former resident seemed to have run a B & B here, and our SOE-SYA OBIZA inherited the previous appearance and overlapped with the shadow of the kimono shop, creating an incredible and wonderful space. If so, I became interested in offering the empty rooms as a guesthouse and began negotiating with the municipal government and submitting various application materials.

A very friendly young man who worked at the municipal government once joked with me, ‘In this day and age (due to COVID-19), many people have given up on running a B&B, and it’s so rare to see someone applying for it now…’ We all laughed at his comment. Looking back, it’s now a cherished memory of mine to have started this guesthouse here.

SOE-SYA OBIZA is not a renovated instagrammable townhouse B & B with modern decoration and various high-end furniture and appliances. It has essentially remained unchanged since its inheritance. However, SOE-SYA OBIZA is ultimately a space that allows people to revisit the Showa era of Japan. At the same time, it’s an old townhouse that enables visitors to truly experience the original meaning of the four seasons in Kyoto. It’s cool in the summer and quite cold in the winter. We invite you to come to this traditional folk house and experience its century-old history and the changing of the seasons!

SOE-SYA OBIZA is not a vacation rental house, nor is it a hotel that provides meticulous hospitality. It’s also not a Japanese inn with considerate service. SOE-SYA OBIZA is a type of homeowner-residence guesthouse that operates in accordance with Item 1 of Article 3 of the Japanese new Private Lodging Business Law. Therefore, even though we live here day and night, we can still provide you with two rooms that overlook the Japanese-style inner courtyard. I usually work at home. However, if I have time, I would like to have tea with you in the shared coffee space.

This is SOE-SYA OBIZA. Please keep in touch!
